Constitution
1) The society shall be called ExpAnd and shall be affiliated to the University of St Andrews Students’ Association.
2) The aim of the society shall be as follows:
i)To facilitate and organise expeditions, encourage research, adventurous pursuits and independent
travel
ii) Organise skills based courses relevant to expedition planning
ii) Ensure the availability of relevant literature.
iii) Provide training in leadership, risk assessment, safety and field skills
vi) Compile and make available a database of contacts
v) Create a forum for advice, discussion and debate
vi) Promote ethical and environmental good practice
vii) Increase awareness of expedition support and funding
viii) Promote collaboration with relevant institutions in Britain and host countries
ix) Emphasise the importance of good quality reports
x) Encourage leaving a light footprint
xi) Organise talks with professionals in the expedition and related fields.
Xii) Organise training for members to increase knowledge of expeditions.
3) i)Ordinary Membership shall be open to all matriculated students of the University of St Andrews.
ii) Other persons shall be eligible for Associate Membership
iii) Honorary Officers and Members may be elected by a general meeting of the society (provided they are of some status in relation to the aims of the society) either for life or for a specified period of time, in which case they will be eligible for re-election.
iv) The Director of Student Development & Activities, the SSC Societies Officer, the SSC Member for Societies Grants and the SSC Member for Societies Elections shall be deemed Honorary Members.
4) i) There shall be the following executive office-bearers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Social Secretary and Publicity and Fundraising Secretary
ii) These posts shall form the executive committee of the society. The committee may co-opt further members at a general meeting of the society as it sees fit, but these shall not be executive committee members.
5) The affairs of the society shall be conducted by a committee of conducted by a committee of 6 members, who are to be elected at the AGM.
The committee shall meet at least 3 times each semester.
6) The committee shall follow the Standing Orders for all affiliated societies as laid down by the societies Committee of the Students’ Association.
7) i)The Finances of the society shall be dealt with along the lines laid down by the Societies Committee. In the Event of a deficit, this shall be paid off by an equal subscription from all members. The annual subscription shall be reviewed annually by the committee and consequently approved at the AGM.
ii) Two signatories of the Students’ Association Cash Office shall appear on the bank mandate.
8)i) The Society shall have the following outside affiliations, outside of the University of St Andrews Students Association: Royal Geographical Society, Young Explorers Trust
ii) All members hall have the option of not contributing to these outside affiliations.
9) The quorum for a committee meeting shall be at least two-thirds of all elected committee members, providing one of them is the President or Vice President. All elected committee members shall be given at least twenty four hours notice of any committee meeting.
10) i) A copy of this constitution shall be displayed at every committee meeting and at every General Meeting of the Society.
ii) Any Proposed alterations to this constitution shall be passed by the committee of the society and require a two thirds majority of all members present at the general meeting of the society. Alterations must also be ratified by the Societies Committee
