About
Who are we?
St. Andrews Expedition Society aka “ExpAnd“, was affiliated into the Student’s Union in December 2007. After a very successful year we have grown by leaps and bounds. We already have a large group of basal members and a steadily growing number of intakes. Our eight person committee founded the society on the ethos of sharing, creating and renewing the art of expeditioning. The last official St. Andrews expedition documented, was the highly successful 1975 Greenland expedition. We hope to continue their success and take this society to a new summit. We are garnering interest from the local press to national organisations.
What we do?
Our goal is to provide students a support base to transform their seemingly unachievable expedition ideas into a reality. We will accomplish this by offering knowledge, experience and wisdom gained through extensive training and previous expeditions. We wish to impart the knowledge that expeditions can be carried out by anyone who has a goal and will apply themselves with dedication towards that goal. To create an expedition from nothing can be a complex affair but an ultimately rewarding, educational experience, one in which the skills learned are transferable to all aspects of life. Without the expertise of where to begin when planning an expedition, one can be overwhelmed; that is where ExpAnd step in. In short, we aim to instruct students on expedition planning and leading to provide them with the knowledge to take part in their own expeditions. Training is provided throughout the year at various workshops, talks, and seminars with the expeditions taking place during the summer. We have an illustrious line up of special guest speakers including such notables as Paul Rose and Antony Jinnman.
Our expeditions
Our maiden expedition goes to Tanzania and is in summer 2009. (details: click here) This expedition, the 10 months of planning that precede it and the post-expedition analysis will provide our core group of members the knowledge and experience of how to plan, conduct and carry out a successful and safe expedition. This essential knowledge will be extensively recorded and passed on to the whole of the society and enable future endeavors to be carried out with success. This core group of members and this first expedition will be the foundation upon which the future of the society is built. Help us to build the strongest of foundations and allow our members to ExpAnd their Horizons…
